Shelter Systems
The Western Shelter system was designed to provide an easily transported, simple to erect, and, most importantly, weather-secure working environment for operations in remote locations. From the arctic to the tropics, the proven reliability of our designs, material and construction has consistently exceeded customer expectations in the harshest of conditions.
Performance under these critical conditions has brought our Western Shelter line to the attention of agencies and organizations in the fire, rescue, medical, military and disaster response fields. Since 1992, Western Shelter Systems has been a primary supplier of emergency response shelters for FEMA, NDMS, USAR, DMAT, CDC, federal, state, county and municipal fire and police jurisdictions; as well as forest service, military, hospital and industrial organizations. Our shelters can be found supporting government and private operations on every continent and in every corner of the globe.
THE WESTERN SHELTER CONCEPT
The Western Shelter design is based on the geometry of the octagon shape, which inherently delivers more structural integrity than a conventional square or rectangular structure. The circular or oblong nature of our shelters, consisting of twice the number of side-wall panels, delivers proportionally more lateral strength than structures placed on 90 degree angles only.
As increased loads are placed on the roof, interlocking eave bars generate more stability to the shelter. The additional planes of the sides also tend to shed wind load, thus minimizing wall flap and creating a quieter and more secure interior. Since 1988 there have been no reports of an occupied Western Shelter being damaged by snow load.
The framework of the Western Shelter is an articulated mechanism that works very much like an umbrella. The mainframe unfolds to provide roof trusses, while vertical legs fold down to form the roof assembly. Horizontal eave and base bars then snap in to provide a lateral tie to the structure. Our eave bars are designed with a rigid, captive hook and loop strip to securely bond the fabric cover to the frame. Two persons can have most models up and working in as little as 15 minutes. With aluminum-framed, single or double-wide collapsible doors, plenty of large three-way windows, our unique ventilation caps, and a full array of logistical support equipment, the Western Shelter provides unprecedented field protection to support your mission.
